EVE Online - Second Impression

I say second impression, because this isn't my first encounter with EVE Online. EVE is such a massive game in every respect, that my first attempts at understanding its complexities ultimately lead me to uninstall it. I simply cannot express in words how insanely huge the game feels from the minute you begin creating your character. And even given that fact, it is amazing that at this very moment, there is something like 40,000 players online (and there are many more who are subscribers).

But at second glance, I am not at all surprised that the following is so significant. The absurdly detailed world and game play are what make the game so incredibly beautiful, literally, beyond words. Despite its size, those behind EVE have paid immense detail to every single aspect of this game, every pixel, every interface, seriously. Everything. From a software development perspective, it is agonizingly painful to even attempt to wrap my head around the planning and execution of a project so utterly dedicated to the minutiae on a scale that makes even World of Warcraft look like a console title.

Thankfully I was able to sign up for another 14 day trial and give it another chance. As you can tell, I'm impressed. EVE was even written in Python and has clients that run natively on Windows, Mac and Linux. Now that is cool.

For now, I'll spare you additional textual details and leave you with some screenshots I took earlier this morning. Maybe this can convey my review a little more accurately. The images below are actual in-game screenshots, nothing pre-rendered.
